How Balance Works

Three different balance systems provide our brains with information. These are processed and used to enable us to stand, walk, sit down and generally move in a variety of ways. How well these balance systems work largely determines how well we cope with all of the above day to day tasks.

What are the 3 balance systems?

  • Provides information from our skin, joints (tendons/ligaments) and muscles on where our body is positioned in space relative to the surfaces we are standing or sitting on.

  • Sensitive system in our inner ears that provides information to our brain and eyes on the position and movement of our head.

  • Our eyes provide information of where we are in proximity to the world around us.

There are many types of balance training such as static balance (maintaining balance whilst standing still), dynamic balance (maintaining balance whilst moving) and perturbation / reactive balance (maintaining balance in reaction to a disturbance).

Better Balance PLUS+ will use the information gathered from your assessment to determine what type of balance training will best achieve your goals and needs.

SAFETY IS A PRIORITY!

There are risks involved in any type of balance training as we are trying to challenge your balance systems.

It is important to not try at home all of the balance exercises you may perform with Better Balance PLUS+. We are trained to assess the capabilities of each person and exercise level to help minimise any risks.
